Associates play a significant role in shaping and sustaining the culture of the firm through their critical contributions to all aspects of firm life. Partners place their trust in them and value their contributions in many ways. Associates, for example,
  • Play a central role in evaluating and recruiting summer and full-time associates
    (see Hiring Group);
  • Work with partners as members of the Training Advisory Committee to develop and improve all aspects of the firm's many training programs;
  • Join with partners from the Associates Committee to plan their career development;
  • Serve with partners as members of the Associates Development Committee in monitoring, and recommending changes to, firmwide policies and practices relative to associate development.
  • Organize and administer firm-sponsored sports and social activities.

Moriah Agovino (Fordham University School of Law '03) and Matt Traupman (University of Virginia School of Law '02) both do In-Office Interviews as part of their participation in the firm's hiring program, one of the many aspects of firm life where associates make valuable contributions.

A busy professional life challenges responsibilities outside the firm. We do not have a silver bullet, but believe that flexibility and respect are important building blocks. Our structure and culture make this possible. By way of example, we were one of the first firms to take initiatives in the following areas:

  • Offering a choice of individually tailored reduced-time work schedules;
  • Establishing our own on-site emergency day-care center for children; and
  • Providing laptops, dedicated high speed lines and subsidized computer options for working at home.

Litigation associate Kristen McLean (Boston College Law School '00), left, and Corporate associate Stacy Vezina (Harvard Law School '92) are two of the twenty-seven Ropes & Gray associates currently on reduced-time status.

Associates do not merely contribute to our culture of collaboration — they thrive within it. Those who ultimately decide to pursue career paths outside Ropes & Gray find that the training and experience they obtain here combine to create an unparalleled array of public- and private-sector job opportunities throughout the country. And, according to published statistics, those who stay with the firm advance to partnership at one of the highest rates among Vault.com's list of America's Top 100 Law Firms. It takes commitment and compromise, but the men and women who make their careers at Ropes & Gray demonstrate that it is possible to deliver excellent service to clients while enjoying close relationships with one's colleagues and maintaining active involvements outside the firm.
